Laitek Successfully Completes Unprecedented Data Migration for Banfield, the Pet Hospital®

Homewood, Ill. (August 2010)—Laitek Inc., a pioneer in medical data migration and storage services for Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) system replacements, today announced it has successfully completed a large-scale data migration for Banfield, The Pet Hospital®. An uncommon event in veterinary medicine, the migration is the beginning of a strong relationship between the two industry leaders as well as a valuable demonstration of Laitek’s capabilities, for the growing data migration and storage needs of the veterinary community.

As the largest general veterinary practice in the world, Banfield’s rapid revenue growth and accelerated conversion plan for hospitals from analog radiography to digital radiography necessitated a mid-2009 initiative to further advance the hospital’s Payment Card Industry (PCI) security levels. A significant part of this process included moving diagnostic images for 352 primary care veterinary hospitals from an external vendor PACS to Banfield’s internal data center within a short timeframe. Because of the project’s challenges and scope, executives began a search of data migration companies within human medicine, when a strong recommendation led Banfield to Laitek.

“Our veterinary practice chose to partner with Laitek because of their experience, expertise and willingness to share the workload with our practice in data migration,” said Kerri Marshall, DVM, MBA, senior director of medical informatics for Banfield. “Since we built our new Banfield PACS system and finished the data migration, our speed of service in teleradiology, including doctor and client consultations have significantly improved. This transition has allowed for greater efficiency and quality of medicine within our hospitals. Moving forward, we need a quality, scalable solution as our practice plans to convert all 760 hospitals from analog to digital over the next three to five years – Laitek offers this solution.”

Attracted by the opportunity to break new ground and use its unique approach to data migration, Laitek committed to the project and developed a migration strategy customized for veterinary medicine and to Banfield’s specific needs. Laitek’s top project managers and migration engineers worked closely with Banfield’s internal teams to accommodate the several simultaneous phases already in motion as part of the hospital’s upgrade. The successful migration was completed on time and within budget, in a demonstration that set the precedent for data migration in veterinary medicine.

“While data migration in the veterinary community is relatively uncharted territory, Laitek’s approach to medical imaging migration is founded on the unique elements of each project—we were eager to prove this with Banfield,” said Laitek founder and president, Dr. Fred Behlen. “When you treat data properly it enables a faster, more accurate migration in the short-term and sets up a company, such as Banfield, for greater flexibility in the future. We look forward to forming strong relationships, and partnerships, within the veterinary profession as Banfield, and the greater veterinary community, continues to advance.”
