CANADIAN MANUFACTURER RETURNS TO MEDICA WITH NEW STANDARD FOR THERAPEUTIC PHLEBOTOMY PROCEDURESCardioMeds unique FDA-approved therapeutic phlebotomy system and highflow long-term dialysis catheter are industry leaders. Lindsay, Ontario, September 7, 2017
- CardioMed Supplies, an ISO-certified medical device manufacturer and distributor based in Canada, will introduce a new, safety-first model of THERASAFE®, its already highly regarded, FDA-approved Therapeutic Phlebotomy Set during MEDICA, the world's largest annual medical trade fair, November 13-16 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The new THERASAFE® models additional patient safety features include a new collection bag that now eliminates any risk of air transferring to the patient's access line and a new built-in split septum neutral valve allowing easier sampling or re-infusion access.
"In short, I think it is fair to say in simple terms that for Therapeutic Phlebotomy procedures, THERASAFE® raises the whole standard of care," says CardioMed's director of sales and marketing, Raphael Dubé. "And that's exactly what we've been doing as a company for the past 30 years or so. We've been using our manufacturing and research skills to provide hospitals and other medical facilities with a growing range of innovative, well designed products - just as THERASAFE® - which are safer, more affordable, and more reliable medical technology."
Therapeutic Phlebotomy is the controlled removal of larger amounts of blood from a patient through a needle puncture of a vein. Traditional phlebotomy procedures run the risk, to both the patient and the clinician, of accidental puncture or "needlestick", as it is known. Its risky because traditionally the puncture needle is covered only after removing it from the patient. THERASAFE®, however, uses, a passive needle protection device, which covers the needle before clinicians remove it, greatly reducing the likelihood of needlesticks. In addition, the THERASAFE® needle is a needle gauge size smaller than other kits, both enhancing patient comfort during the procedure and reducing accidental needlesticks. As well, other sets usually use 500 ml glass vacuum bottles or standard blood bags, both off-label devices that have been adapted. THERASAFE®, however, is a dedicated device, made specifically for treating patients with Hemochromatosis and Polycythemia. It is the only therapeutic phlebotomy specific device the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has approved. It is also approved by Health Canada and recently received the CE Mark of acceptance throughout the European Union.
In addition to THERASAFE, Dubé says CardioMed will bring other advanced CardioMed products to MEDICA 2017 including:HighFlow Hemodialysis Catheter KitDiaSil Hemodialysis Catheter KitHeart Cooling JacketParaSil™Paracentesis Drainage SystemRescue Clamp, catheter repair clampCathFlate, Balloon Inflation Device KitPunctur-Guard Luer lock tube holderCentralCard NovaCath Venous Catheter Kit.
In addition to designing and making its own equipment, CardioMed partners with leading American and European manufacturers to distribute other devices, but only those that complement and match its own product lines in quality. Among its distributing accomplishments, CardioMed leads in providing world markets with Safety Engineered Devices (SEDs), both of its own making and other devices from recognized SED manufactures.
