About us

Barbara Thompson is Managing Director of innovative British Orthopaedic manufacturer AngelMed Ltd.

Originally founded in 2009 to satisfy a gap in the market for her award winning invention, ClaviBrace® - a device for managing clavicle (collarbone) fractures - AngelMed Ltd now has a range of products to offer a global market.

The company evolved as a result of Barbara falling from her horse, which she refers to as, her lucky break.

"I had hit the ground hard. It was my first fracture - a bad one - broken in four places. The first thing I did when I got back from hospital - with the usually prescribed arm sling - was to start a desperate internet search for something that would make me feel more comfortable and escape the excruciating pain. I was determined, if possible, to avoid almost inevitable surgery.

I ordered many types of body brace with hopeful enthusiasm. Could any of them allow me some semblance of normality while the bone mended?Alas, each one was a disappointment, but they prompted me to try out a few ideas of my own.

By adding bits here and there, a rather crude harness emerged, one that helped me feel safe and confident that I was doing the best I could for my body to heal naturally, and hopefully, avoid the downtime and scar of surgery.

My 'invention' allowed me to escape the awful pain and just five weeks later I was back with my medical consultant, holding both my arms in the air and asking him which side had been broken.

His reaction told me that this was no ordinary occurrence. In fact, he pronounced me a "walking miracle. To me the miracle is the result of that crude creation.

"We were thrilled when ClaviBrace® won the Da Vinci Award for Medical Breakthrough in March 2010, reinforcing our belief that we had designed something truly different – something capable of helping countless others.
