Diabetes mellitus is among the chronic metabolic diseases world wide with the highest incidence. There are more than 10 million people living in Europe with the disease. Approximately 4 million Germans suffer from diabetes - the tendency rising.
About 95 % of these cases are classified as type II diabetes, approximately 5 % as type I diabetes. Another serious form of diabetes is Gestational Diabetes (=GD). About 4 % of all pregnancies are complicated by GD .
Lack of treatment or poorly controlled blood sugar levels can cause micro- and/or macroangiopathia. We present current research on common complications of long standing diabetes, i.e. Retinopathia diabetica, Nephropathia diabetica and Diabetic foot syndrome.
