GETEMED provides care for high-risk patients in Brandenburg with telemedicine equipment and infrastructure

15/11/2011GETEMED Medizin- und Informationstechnik AG

GETEMED Medizin- und Informationstechnik AG, located in Teltow in the German state of Brandenburg, is a partner in the first state-wide telemonitoring network for the care of high-risk cardiac patients. For the project, which was launched in Brandenburg in September 2011, GETEMED and Deutsche Telekom AG provide all the necessary medical equipment as well as the communications and IT infrastructure. GETEMED is presenting the project to a wider public for the first time at the MEDICA 2011 trade fair, with live demonstrations of how telemedical care of patients can be provided thanks to the cooperation between hospitals, doctors and telemedicine centres in Brandenburg.
Congestive heart failure is one of the most common illnesses in Germany, affecting an estimated two million people; it is virtually impossible to provide around-the-clock care for patients who live far away from medical facilities. In the Brandenburg project, which is viewed as ground-breaking in the field of German telemedicine, two newly established telemedicine centres in the towns of Cottbus and Brandenburg/Havel will begin in the first phase by monitoring up to 500 high-risk patients with chronic congestive heart failure; doctors at the Carl-Thiem-Klinikum in Cottbus and the Städtisches Klinikum in Brandenburg will assess vital parameters on a 24-hour basis – if critical conditions are identified, they will inform the patients concerned and their local GPs and initiate further care measures. A contract between the hospitals and the AOK-Nordost health insurance company was also signed.
Michael Scherf, GETEMED’s CEO, says: “Telemedicine is the key to better utilization of medical resources, particularly in rural regions, thereby supporting patient care. Finally we are now able to incorporate the existing technical possibilities into everyday medical practice here.”
