64-slice CT-Imaging with a Gantry Rotation Time of 0.33 Seconds
Siemens Medical Solutions introduced the Somatom Sensation Cardiac 64, the first 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner particularly optimized for cardiac, thoracic and vascular imaging. With a standard gantry rotation speed of 0.33 seconds – a further enhancement compared to the basis system Somatom Sensation 64 – the new scanner routinely achieves a temporal resolution of 83 milliseconds (ms), and thus facilitates scanning of patients even with higher heart rates and irregular heartbeats, virtually freezing the heart's motion.
The Somatom Sensation Cardiac 64 is completed with HeartView CI, a comprehensive portfolio of leading cardiovascular applications including HeartView CT for ECG-synchronized scanning and 3D image reconstruction of the heart, syngo Calcium Scoring for the detection and quantification of coronary calcium burden, syngo Vessel View for semi-automated vessel analysis and evaluation of aneurysms, and syngo Argus for the virtual 4D-visualization and semi-automated evaluation of ventricular function.
"The combination of the fast rotation speed of 0.33 seconds with 64-slice acquisition now enables an ECG-gated coverage of the entire chest in a short 20 seconds breath-hold, and the scanning of the coronaries in nine seconds. With the Somatom Sensation Cardiac 64, it is for the first time possible to evaluate the most common causes of acute chest pain with a single scan,” says Richard Hausmann, Ph.D., president, CT Division, Siemens Medical Solutions.
The industry's fastest gantry rotation speed of 0.33 seconds (standard on the Somatom Sensation Cardiac 64) will also become available as an option for cardiac and advanced body CT applications on the basis system, Somatom Sensation 64, which was first introduced at the RSNA 2003 and which comes with a standard 0.37 seconds rotation time. After completing a comprehensive testing phase at leading clinical institutions in the Unites States, Europe and Asia, the 0.33-second rotation time on Siemens' Somatom Sensation 64-slice scanners will be commercially available in fall 2004.
Background information: Utilizing Siemens' unique z-Sharp Technology, the Somatom Sensation 64-slice scanners deliver optimal image quality in advanced body and cardiovascular imaging applications. A routine scan of the coronary arteries takes only about nine seconds. The spatial resolution of 0.4 millimeters (mm) allows clear visualization of even finest anatomical detail. z-Sharp Technology combines rapid movement of the X-ray source in the Straton tube with a 64-channel UltraFastCeramic (UFC) detector design. This enables a doubling of the amount of slices acquired per rotation and thus is designed to substantially enhance spatial resolution and image quality without an increase in X-ray dose. The system's unique temporal and isotropic spatial resolution now allows for motion free evaluation of peripheral segments of the coronary arteries, including plaque evaluation and improved follow-up assessment of stent patency with a high confidence.
"In my opinion, with this level of spatial and temporal resolution, the Siemens 64-slice CT scanners have set a standard to which other systems will be measured. The future of volume imaging for cardiac and non-cardiac imaging has now arrived,” says Elliot Fishman, M.D., professor of Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "The new CT system allows for detection of stenoses in coronary arteries without a diagnostic intracardiac catheter,” says Stefan Achenbach, M.D. at the Institute of Internal Medicine II at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
