Tested for the heart and lungs – and the entire body

Developers from Siemens have expanded the possible applications of the syngo DynaCT software in interventional radiology.

To stop a cerebral hemorrhage, the radiologist needs a fast, uncomplicated method for locating it. Syngo DynaCT software gives the support needed: it provides physicians with soft tissue information during interventional procedures. The images created on angiographic C-arm systems enable soft tissue differentiation for example in the brain. Since the market introduction of the software in 2004, developers at Siemens Medical Solutions have continued its development and expanded upon its potential areas of application. In addition to neuroradiological acquisitions, physicians can now create images of the entire body with millimetre precision using syngo DynaCT. Moreover, reconstruction times for the acquisitions have been reduced to less than a minute. Siemens Medical Solutions presented syngo DynaCT at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2007 in Vienna.

The software provides the interventional radiologist with detailed slice images in the angiography suite. This improves decision making for a wide range of interventions. The software for example offers physicians low contrast images during the embolization of tumors. The tiny feeding vessels of the tumor can be easily detected and embolized. In addition, syngo DynaCT provides important information with respect to the anatomical structure of the tumor. After embolization, the interventional radiologist can use the software to check whether the embolization material is distributed in the vessels as required. Through this expanded application spectrum, syngo DynaCT has expanded from an application for neuroradiology to an application for the entire body. The physician receives the soft tissue information during his intervention. The patient no longer has to be transferred to the radiology department in order to bring him to radiology. This saves time, simplifies the workflow, and makes the examination more comfortable and less stressful for the patient.

The developers at Siemens Medical Solutions have not only made syngo DynaCT more multi-faceted, they have also made it faster. They have reduced the reconstruction time for clinical acquisitions from the previous seven minutes down to less than a minute. This is a significant advantage, because in some cases time means life. To stop internal bleeding, for example, it is critical for the interventional radiologist to detect the bleeding as quickly as possible. The physician therefore receives indispensable information for an intervention within a minute – without having to transfer the patient and again wasting valuable time. This in turn helps to considerably minimize the risk for some interventions.

“We have had extremely positive experiences with syngo DynaCT. We believe this technology is an innovative milestone in this area – it has had an enormous effect on our daily work. Previously, we had to bring intubated patients to the scanner. But now, with our new syngo DynaCT system, we are able to decide directly at the operating table whether an intervention is necessary. This advantage can really save lives,” said Saruhan Cekirge (MD), an interventional radiologist at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. “Many of our customers have already integrated syngo DynaCT into their interventional radiology processes and cannot imagine their daily routine without the application. We want syngo DynaCT to be able to be used for all applications – and for this reason, our developers have expanded and improved upon potential applications. As a result, syngo DynaCT has earned its place in interventional radiology,” said Norbert Gaus (PhD), head of the Angiography, Fluoroscopy, and Radiography division at Siemens Medical Solutions.

Syngo DynaCT can be used on all angiography systems from Siemens with flat detectors. While with Axiom Artis dFA, syngo DynaCT is available in a monoplane system, the physician can use syngo DynaCT in a biplane system with Axiom Artis dBA and with a ceiling-mounted system with Axiom Artis dTA. An upgrade is available for Artis systems that are already installed. Syngo DynaCT has received FDA clearance in the USA.
