Safe diagnosis with the latest technology

Siemens has revised the Somatom Emotion computed tomography system and made it more efficient than ever .

Diagnosis has to be fast and safe – this is the only way for the physician to help patients effectively and in a timely manner. Given the enormous financial challenges that healthcare systems currently face, however, diagnosis also has to be affordable. The revised Somatom Emotion computed tomography system (CT) offers physicians support in this area: detailed, high-quality images with up to 0.5 millimeter slice thickness and reconstruction times in seconds are available with this system. Based on experience collected to date on more than 5,000 installed systems with similar technical prerequisites, Siemens Medical Solutions has improved many of the functions of the Somatom Emotion and made it more efficient.

Based on its comparably low acquisition costs, long lifecycle, and compact design, this powerful CT system is suited primarily to radiology practices and smaller hospitals. The revised Somatom Emotion provides the physician with new functions and supports him in reaching accurate diagnoses. For example, Computer-Aided Detection (CAD), on the one hand, automatically finds and marks conspicuous structures, which is very helpful to physicians performing virtual colonoscopy, for example. Using preprocessing on the other hand, data can be prepared prior to the evaluation, which means they are selected faster for diagnosis. The WorkStream4D software automates time-consuming reconstructions that the physician used to create manually. In addition, an intuitive user interface that follows clear rules and a new selection of scan protocols simplifies data collection. All of this comes at the lowest possible dose, because the integrated CARE Dose4D software reduces radiation exposure by 66 percent as compared to conventional examinations. Via syngo WebSpace, the new Somatom Emotion offers an optional thin client workstation solution which enables the physician to select and edit data securely via the Internet.

With its compact size, the Somatom Emotion fits in rooms as small as 18 square meters, and is easy to assemble. Given these advantages, its robust design (e.g., air conditioning, a long-lasting X-ray tube), and the lowest connection power among all 16- slice systems, the system works reliably even under extreme conditions. In addition, the user-friendly design simplifies access to and positioning of the patient. The examination is pleasant for the patient and costs remain low. “As an outpatient center, we work in a very competitive environment. With our Somatom Emotion we can offer full clinical performance within the smallest space,” said Joseph F. Casoria, Business Manager at Hartsdale Imaging in New York, USA.

Precise, strictly-controlled production processes are the basis for the Somatom Emotion’s reliability. Additionally, Siemens offers a special service: the Guardian Program proactively monitors system functions online. It allows deviations from the norm to be detected before problems occur. Siemens Medical Solutions has been a leader in the development of CT technology since 1974. “With its fully revised Somatom Emotion, Siemens is providing costeffective access to modern 16-slice computed tomography. As a result, we ensure that patient care remains at a high level while keeping costs low – features of major importance to health care today and tomorrow,” said Bernd Montag (PhD), head of the Computed Tomography Division at Siemens Medical Solutions.
