Giltech Limited

Giltech Celebrates 25 Years of Business

Giltech, a world leader in the field of controlled delivery and biodegradable technologies is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month.

The Ayr-based firm was established in 1984 by Dr Tom Gilchrist, the renowned medical scientist, following his successful career at Strathclyde University.

Success came early to Giltech when it developed Sorbsan®, an innovative wound dressing that revolutionised woundcare around the world.

The company has continued to invent and innovate, expanding its expertise in alginate-based technologies to include sodium calcium phosphate glasses and other controlled release and biodegradable technologies. Giltech’s technologies have been used to produce a range of pioneering and market-leading wound care products including Sorbsan® and Arglaes®.

Despite its success, Giltech has maintained its small size with a core team at its heart. It has also managed to retain its Scottish roots whilst working with some of the world’s largest companies.

Reflecting on the past quarter century, Dr Gilchrist commented, “The main theme has been medical devices and to me the satisfaction lies in seeing our technologies incorporated into many products in use internationally by doctors and nurses – products which genuinely do what it says on the tin.”

Gillian Watson, Managing Director of Giltech added: “Giltech has firmly established itself as a pioneering player in the fields of biodegradable materials and controlled delivery systems. Twenty-five years young, it continues to create and innovate, now expanding out of its original medical focus into exciting new markets.”

Giltech is a specialist co-development partner that works with customers around the world to help differentiate their products through the creation of bespoke formulations of its biodegradable and controlled release technologies which have broad application across a variety of sectors such as medical, water treatment, personal care and oil and gas.
