Waltham, Mass., October 8, 2013 – STANLEY Healthcare today announced that Laura Roberts, pathology manager of transfusion services at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals, will be presenting at the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Annual Meeting in Denver. Roberts will share the experience and findings of the Providence, R.I.-based hospitals, which implemented a STANLEY Healthcare-designed wireless environmental monitoring system throughout the hospital system to support its transfusion service.
"Every hospital's transfusion service must address federal regulations and industry standards around monitoring the temperature and humidity levels of blood and component storage," Roberts said. "The traditional process has been handwritten paper logs. In addition to being cumbersome, a manual approach can also increase the likelihood of delaying or overlooking opportunities to track and trend equipment function."
Roberts' presentation will provide an overview of Lifespan's study to evaluate its automated environmental monitoring solution, which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is endorsed by the European Hematology Association (EHA), and uses sensors certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
In the study, the solution allowed Lifespan to set intervals for continual temperature and humidity checks. Using the hospital's existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, the sensors sent readings to an online application, which then issued alerts for out-of-range readings while capturing data to support scheduled or ad hoc reports.
"The data capture supports better compliance with regulatory requirements and identifying trends over time as well as the customized real-time alerts that improve quality of care through constant monitoring of safe temperature and humidity ranges," Roberts noted.
Roberts will also share the economics of investing in a Wi-Fi environmental monitoring solution. According to Lifespan calculations, system payback could be as rapid as three months due to reduced labor costs.
